MIXED-OPERATIONS

Order of Operations

a. If only Addition and Subtraction involved, solution = start whichever come first left to right
ex. 45632 + 6543 - 4326
        45632          52175
     +  6543         -  4326
        52175          47849
b. If only Multiply and Divide involved, solution = start whichever come first left to right.
ex. 32145 X 6 -:- 3
       32145                   64290
     X       6              3/192870
     192870                 18
                                   12
                                   12
                                      8
                                      6
                                      27
                                      27
                                          0
                                          0
c. But If multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, and so on, are all contained in one problem,  the order of operations is as follows.
1. Bracket
2. Of
3. Division
4. Multiplication
5. Addition
6. Subtraction
An easy way to remember the order of operations is B O D M A S
Example 1
Simplify each of the following.
  1. 16 + 4 × 3
  1. First, the multiplication,
    16 + 4 × 3 = 16 + 12
    Then, the addition,
    16 + 12 = 28
